After co-authoring The Shadow University, Alan C. Kors and Harvey A. Silverglate received hundreds of pleas for help from victims of illiberal policies, double standards, and intrusions upon private consciences on college campuses. In response, they founded the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), a non-profit based in Philadelphia. FIRE’s mission is to defend and sustain individual rights at America’s colleges and universities, including freedom of speech, legal equality, due process, religious liberty, and sanctity of conscience. These essential freedoms are protected through two FIRE Programs: the Individual Rights Defense Program and the Individual Rights Education Program. The FIRE's blog, The Torch, keeps readers up-to-date on important campus matters across the country.
